The urgent consideration law to remove constraints placed on the Uruguayan economy by 15 years of Frente Amplio governments has arrived in Parliament. If the Colorados and Cabildo Abierto don't sink it, Uruguay should remain positioned to emerge from the present hysteria relatively well.
All Uruguayan political parties with legislative representation and the Electoral Court came to an agreement today to postpone May's departmental elections until October 4th. To do this a law will be drafted allowing the Electoral Court to suspend elections.
Week One: Over the first few days local news media settled on the word malabaristas, literally jugglers, as the hot new word to use to refer to particularly obnoxious pichis. Nevermind that in at least one case the police broke up what was by all appearances a machete fight. The narrative, even among the better local Spanish language papers, was that the cops pulled a shotgun on some performers. (more...)
