The radio telescope at Arecibo observatory in Puerto Rico has collapsed with its 820 ton instrument platform crashing after the steel cables supporting it failed. The telescope had been closed since August due to the failure of an auxiliary support cable. Just a few months later the situation degraded such that the remaining cables were insufficient to maintain the instrument platform above the dish. Construction on massive instrument began in 1960 and the telescope saw first light November 1963.
