UN Arms Embargo Against Iran Expires

An arms embargo placed on Iran by the United Nations in 2007 has expired. An October 18th, 2020 expiration date for the embargo was set in a pact as the result of negotiations in 2015. Despite the withdrawal of the US from the pact and demands for further sanctions and embargoes against Iran, US protests did not have an effect. As a result of spending 13 years under the embargo Iran's local arms industry managed to grow to meet local demand resulting in the September 2019 loss of a US Global Hawk drone and the January 2020 retaliatory Iranian missile strike on US Military targets in Iraq after the US Military assassinated Iranian Quds force commander Qassem Soleimani.
