Uber Eats Quits Uruguay

Uber Eats announced today that they will cease operations in Uruguay effective June 4th, 2020. Of the locally available app based delivery services, Uber Eats was known for being the most expensive and presenting the smallest selection of restaurants. The full announcement is reproduced below:

Tras casi dos años desde nuestra llegada a Uruguay para ofrecer una opción de entrega de alimentos conveniente y confiable junto a cientos de restaurantes locales, lamentamos comunicarte que la aplicación Uber Eats dejará de estar disponible en Uruguay a partir del día 4 de junio de 2020.

Esta es una decisión difícil, pero no altera nuestro compromiso con Uruguay, donde seguiremos dando soluciones a través del servicio de movilidad de Uber.

Nuestra prioridad ahora es minimizar en lo posible el impacto en nuestros equipos, restaurantes asociados, socios repartidores y usuarios.

Estamos profundamente agradecidos con toda nuestra comunidad de Uber Eats en Uruguay por su apoyo en estos dos años.

    They're ceasing "eats" operations in Romania too, for the record.

      And it does appear all the bubbles are indeed popping. Still, the Uber Eats thing was never competitive here. The restaurants didn't want to work with them, the local market still seems to prefer paying with cash for online purchases (a large part of the line at any of the local bill pay places is peole paying their orders from "Mercado Libre"), and Uber in all its forms other than dating service... Forces plastic payment.
