Goverment workers and retirees making more than 80,000 pesos monthly will see cuts between 5 and 20 percent with political appointees hit the hardest as President Lacalle Pou frees up a chunk of the budget for a spending spree to come. Lacalle Pou noted that the pivot towards increased spending wasn't what he campaigned on. Per the latest announcements, healthcare and municipal workers will not be affected by this resource reallocation. The salary discounting is currently set to run for two months.
The Peso Uruguayo closed the day higher at 42.713 to the dollar on the inter-bank circuit with the weakening US dollar.
